talkingfashion: Marcel Boucher was French by birth and he became one of the finest US costume jewelry designers and makers. His superbly crafted and colorful pieces are often listaken for precious jewelry. He has an apprentice model-maker with Cartier in Paris during the late 1910s and early 1920s, he was transferred to its New York branch in about 1922 and continued working in fine jewelry until the Wall Street crash of 1929. Fortunately for costume jewelry collectors, th eGreat Depression of the 1930s forced Boucher to transfer his considerable talents to costume jewelry, a burgeoning industry that employed more affordable materials.
Boucher et Cie (his own co) was established in 1937. The jewelry produced by Boucher et Cie before Boucher's death on 1965, and up until the early 1970s under the control of his second wife, designer Sandra Semensohn, was of exceptional quality. Often innovative, it is characterized by exquisite metalwork, fabulous rhinestones in hues and cuts that bear a striking resemblance to real gemstones, and wonderfully colorful enameling. Marked either "MB" or "Marboux" (earlier pieces), or signed "Marcel Boucher" or just "Boucher" (later pieces), most pieces are still undervalued. As such they represent an excellent investment.
